🎃 Fall in LA Without Breaking the Bank

Affordability keeps coming up everywhere this season — home prices, wine, you name it — so let’s close things out with the fun version of that conversation: how to actually enjoy fall in Los Angeles without spending a fortune doing it. This city gets a bad rap for being expensive, but autumn here is genuinely one of the best, most affordable stretches of the year if you know where to look. Here are seven ways to get into the season, plus three picks if you’re planning a date night.

Seven Affordable Fall Things To Do

1. Mister Bones Pumpkin Patch, Culver City. Open daily October 4th through the 31st, admission runs around $10 with activities like the giant slide and photo ops priced separately. It’s become a genuine LA fall tradition, and it’s an easy one to build a whole afternoon around.

2. Best Friends Super Adoption, Rose Bowl Stadium. November 1st and 2nd, and it’s the big one — hundreds of adoptable dogs and cats from dozens of rescues, all under one roof, and it’s free to attend. I’ll admit I’m partial to this one. My rescue dog, Luke Skywalker, came from Shelter Hope Pet Shop, and events like this are exactly how great matches happen. 3. Underwood Family Farms Fall Harvest Festival, Moorpark. Running September 26th through October 31st, this is the full harvest experience — pumpkin picking, hayrides, farm animals, the works. A bit of a drive from the city, but worth it if you want the classic fall farm day.

4. DTLA Halloween Block Party. October 26th, free, with live DJs and a costume contest right in the heart of downtown. A great low-cost way to get your costume some mileage before the actual holiday.

5. Hocus Pocus at the Autry, Street Food Cinema. October 3rd, doors at 5:30pm, dog-friendly. Street Food Cinema pairs its screenings with food trucks and live music, so it’s a full evening, not just a movie.

6. Cinespia’s final 2026 season, Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This is your last call for the year — Josie and the Pussycats on September 5th, The Sandlot on September 6th, and Goodfellas on September 12th close out the season. Bring a blanket, grab a spot on the lawn, and catch one before they wrap for the year.

7. Oktoberfest at the Fairplex, Pomona. Fridays and Saturdays, October 4th through the 26th. General admission runs around $16 on Fridays and $25 on Saturdays — a genuinely festive, budget-friendly beer garden day if you want a taste of Bavaria without leaving the 210.

Three Affordable Date Nights

The discount-day movie and dinner. AMC Stubs members get 50% off tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Regal runs its own Value Days on Tuesdays with discounted tickets and half-price popcorn. Pick a midweek showing, pair it with something simple for dinner, and you’ve got a classic date night for a fraction of the usual cost.

A sunset hike. Runyon Canyon is the classic choice — free, right in the heart of West Hollywood, and one of the best skyline views in the city if you time it for golden hour. If you want something quieter and more romantic, Fryman Canyon in Studio City (technically Wilacre Park) is an easy, gently shaded three-mile loop that sees a fraction of the crowds Runyon does — a nicer pick if you actually want to hear each other talk.

A picnic at Griffith Observatory. Bring your own blanket, your own food, and get there before sunset. It’s free, it’s iconic, and there’s something genuinely romantic about watching the city light up from that hillside with someone you like.

What You Can Do

Pick one from the general list and one date night, and put them on the calendar now — the good ones (Cinespia especially) fill up fast once people realize they’re free or nearly free. Fall in LA rewards a little planning more than a little spending.
