Your home is your sanctuary. And if you share it with a four-legged roommate, it needs to work for them too.
I’ll be honest: when I brought my dog home, I thought I was prepared.
Spoiler alert โ I was not.
Turns out, a beautiful, thoughtfully designed home and a pet-friendly home aren’t mutually exclusive. But they do require some intentionality. Sound familiar? ๐
Whether you’re a new pet parent, a long-time fur baby devotee, or someone thinking about buying or selling a home where pets live โ this one’s for you.
โ ๏ธ Hazards Most Pet Parents Don’t Know About
Let’s start with the stuff nobody really talks about.
Plants that are secretly toxic: That gorgeous monstera on your shelf? Toxic to dogs and cats. Same goes for:
- Peace lilies
- Pothos
- Sago palm (this one is seriously dangerous โ even small amounts can be fatal)
- Aloe vera (yes, really)
The ASPCA has a full toxic plant list worth bookmarking: ๐ aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control
Foods hiding in plain sight: Grapes, raisins, xylitol (that sweetener in your gum and some peanut butters), onions, and dark chocolate are all genuinely dangerous. Check your labels. It matters.
Floor-level hazards: Electrical cords, small objects, certain cleaning products stored under sinks โ pets explore with their mouths. A quick audit of your lower cabinets goes a long way.
๐๏ธ Stylish and Pet-Friendly โ Yes, Both
Here’s the good news: the pet-friendly home design world has had a serious glow-up.
Flooring: Hardwood scratches. Light carpet shows everything. The move right now? Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) โ durable, scratch-resistant, easy to clean, and it actually looks gorgeous. In LA’s design-forward market, it’s become a go-to for pet owners and buyers alike.
Furniture: Bouclรฉ and chenille fabrics are having a moment โ and they happen to be relatively pet-hair-friendly. Performance fabrics (look for brands like Crypton or Revolution) are basically indestructible and now come in beautiful options.
Designated pet spaces: Built-in feeding stations, under-stair dog nooks, and stylish crate furniture (yes, that’s a thing) have made it totally possible to honor your pet’s space without sacrificing your aesthetic. Pinterest and Houzz are a rabbit hole worth going down. ๐
๐ก The Real Estate Angle (Because You Knew It Was Coming)
If you’re thinking about buying or selling โ pets matter more than you think.
For sellers: Pet odors and visible damage โ scratched floors, stained carpet โ are among the top reasons buyers emotionally check out of a showing, even if they have pets themselves. Deep cleaning, strategic repairs, and neutralizing odors before listing is non-negotiable. Your agent should be walking you through this. (And if they’re not โ call me.)
For buyers: If you have a large dog, think: yard access, flooring type, proximity to parks and trails. In WeHo and surrounding neighborhoods, I always flag the dog-friendly walkability factor โ it’s a real quality-of-life consideration that doesn’t always make it onto the listing sheet.
Fun fact: According to the American Pet Products Association, nearly 70% of U.S. households own a pet. That means the majority of buyers and sellers are navigating this โ and smart agents know how to work with it.
โจ Quick Win Checklist
Before you scroll on, here are five things you can do this week:
- Audit your houseplants against the ASPCA toxic list
- Check your peanut butter and gum labels for xylitol
- Baby-proof your under-sink cabinets with a simple latch
- Look into LVP if you’re planning any flooring updates
- If you’re prepping to sell โ schedule a pet-specific deep clean
๐ฌ The Bottom Line
Your home should feel like a haven โ for everyone who lives in it, paws included.
And the best part? A pet-safe home is often a smarter, better-maintained home overall. Which โ whether you’re staying put or thinking about your next move โ is always a good investment.
