Because every dog deserves a lightsaber. Or at least a forever home.
I didn’t realize how overwhelming and cumbersome adopting a dog could be β until I was right in the middle of it.
If you’ve been following along, you already know I adopted Luke Skywalker β LSW for short. Fun fact: the rescue named him. The moment I saw that name on his profile, I knew the Force had already done its job. π What I didn’t know going in was how many incredible no-kill rescues are out here doing life-changing work, quietly and tirelessly, for dogs who need someone in their corner.
But here’s the thing nobody tells you: not all rescues are created equal. Just like in real estate β and yes, I’m going there β there are incredible operators with hearts of gold, AND — there are people running what looks like a nonprofit but is really just a “business” in disguise. Scams exist. Shady operations exist. And navigating it alone can be overwhelming.
These eight are my personal picks. Vetted, trusted, and worthy of your time, your heart, and your adoption fees.
Whether you’re ready to adopt, want to volunteer, or are just dog-rescue-curious β this one’s for you.
And stay until the end. Because I have something very exciting to announce. πΆπ‘
π 1. Shelter Hope Pet Shop β Thousand Oaks
Where I found Luke. Need I say more?
π 193 N Moorpark Rd E, Suite F, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 π (805) 379-3538 π shelterhopepetshop.org
Since opening in 2011, Shelter Hope has rescued and re-homed over 16,000 animals β and they do it as a 100% volunteer-powered nonprofit located inside the Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks.
What makes them special is how. They pull strays and surrenders from as close as Ventura County as far as Bakersfield, where the overpopulation crisis is severe β and they specifically take in the dogs others overlook: seniors, medical cases, and dogs from high-kill shelters who are running out of time.
Founder Kim Sill spent four years working undercover investigating puppy mill pet shops, and her work alongside Cesar Millan on The Dog Whisperer brought her national recognition. This isn’t a side project β it’s a full mission.
Their adoption process is intentional and thoughtful: application, phone interview, then a meet-and-greet appointment. They match dogs to the best home, not the first one in line. I went through every step of this with Luke, and I’m genuinely grateful for it.
Specializes in: All breeds and ages, with a special heart for overlooked seniors and dogs pulled from high-kill shelters. Also looking for: Volunteers! Shelter Hope runs entirely on community support β 100% volunteer-powered.
π 2. Wags & Walks β West Los Angeles
Breaking the rescue stigma, one pup at a time.
π 2236 Federal Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90064 π (866) 588-9247 π wagsandwalks.org
Founded in 2011 by Lesley Brog β the daughter of a veterinarian β Wags & Walks was born out of heartbreak: watching healthy, loving dogs get euthanized in LA shelters simply because there wasn’t enough space. Her mission: prove that rescue dogs of every breed, size, and temperament can make extraordinary companions.
Nearly 17,000 dogs have found their forever families here. What makes Wags stand out beyond the numbers is their lifelong commitment β every adoption comes with a promise that if life changes, they’ll always take their dogs back. They also run Wags for Good, a community initiative offering public spay/neuter clinics, affordable wellness care, and food donation programs to help keep pets with the families who love them.
If you’ve ever heard someone say “rescue dogs come with baggage,” Wags & Walks is the living, tail-wagging answer to that myth.
Specializes in: Bully breeds, medical dogs, mamas and litters, and all the dogs others pass over β matched by temperament, not trend.
π 3. Best Friends Animal Society β West LA
The big guns of no-kill.
π 1845 Pontius Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90025 π (424) 208-8840 π bestfriends.org/los-angeles
Best Friends is the national powerhouse behind the NKLA (No-Kill Los Angeles) initiative β a citywide coalition of rescue groups, shelters, and passionate individuals all working toward the same goal: ending the killing of dogs and cats in LA shelters.
Founded in 1984, Best Friends helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters nationally from an estimated 17 million per year to around 347,000 β and their LA center is on the front lines of that work every single day.
Open seven days a week, 11 amβ7 pm. No appointment needed. All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped β and same-day adoptions are often possible.
Specializes in: Large-scale rescue operations, foster programs, community education, and leading the no-kill movement citywide and nationally.
π 4. Downtown Dog Rescue β Maywood / South LA
Where community and compassion meet.
π 5270 Atlantic Blvd, Maywood, CA 90270 (clinic & events location) π Adoptions: (818) 407-4145 | Pet Support: (323) 880-8259 π downtowndogrescue.org
Downtown Dog Rescue has been working in the community since 1996, co-founded by Lori Weise after she met one homeless man and his dog β Iron Head β on the streets of Downtown LA. That encounter changed everything. What started as an effort to spay stray dogs evolved into one of the most community-rooted rescue organizations in the country.
DDR is one of the only volunteer-run programs in California specifically founded to support unhoused and low-income pet owners β not just by rescuing dogs, but by keeping pets with the families who love them through free vet care, food, training, and crisis intervention.
They run free to low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and vaccine clinics throughout South LA, and employ a full-time social worker to support the communities they serve.
Gritty, on-the-ground work. No frills. Just heart.
Specializes in: Community-based rescue, support for unhoused and low-income pet owners, and free wellness services across South LA.
π 5. A Purposeful Rescue β Los Angeles
For the overlooked, the seniors, and the “magical unicorns.”
π 1122 Carmona Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90019 π (323) 744-0737 π apurposefulrescue.org
A Purposeful Rescue exists for the dogs most people scroll pastβseniors, special-needs pups, the ones deemed “unadoptable” by overcrowded shelters. They call their dogs “magical unicorns.” And honestly? That tracks.
This foster-based rescue is fueled entirely by people who believe that every dog β no matter their age, health, or history β deserves a shot at a loving home. If you’re open to giving a senior dog or a special-needs pup their second act, this is your rescue. The love you get back is immeasurable.
Specializes in: Senior dogs, special needs dogs, and the underdogs of the underdog world.
π 6. Vanderpump Dogs β Beverly Grove / West Hollywood
Glam Rescue has a global mission.
π 8134 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90048 π (323) 852-3647 π vanderpumpdogs.org
Yes, that Lisa Vanderpump. But don’t let the celebrity association fool you β the Vanderpump Dog Foundation is the real deal, with a mission to tackle dog overpopulation right here in Los Angeles while also fighting the dog meat trade internationally.
Their gorgeous 6,000-square-foot Rescue Center β complete with a rooftop deck dog run β is designed to give potential adopters a comfortable, home-like setting to meet their new pet. It’s one of the only nurseries in California operating specifically to save pregnant mothers and their babies from euthanasia. And 100% of retail and grooming proceeds go directly back into the rescue.
Specializes in: High-kill shelter rescues, medical cases, pregnant mothers and neonatal puppies, and international dog welfare.
π 7. The LaBelle Foundation β Mid-City Los Angeles
Foster-based, community-driven, and quietly extraordinary.
π 5538 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90019 π (323) 627-3821 π labellefoundation.org
The LaBelle Foundation is a Los Angeles foster-based 501(c)(3) rescue devoted to saving, rehabilitating, and advocating for dogs, with a particular focus on neonatal orphans, medical dogs, and mothers with babies. These are the cases most rescues can’t or won’t take on. LaBelle leans all the way in.
With over 310,000 Instagram followers and a deeply engaged community, they’ve built something rare: a rescue that’s both highly visible and deeply mission-driven.
Specializes in: Neonatal orphans, medical cases, pregnant mothers and puppies, and dogs from shelters across California and beyond.
π 8. Dogs Without Borders β Los Angeles (Foster-Based)
Small dogs, big hearts, global reach.
π P.O. Box 17344, Encino, CA 91416 (foster-based β adoption fairs held every weekend) π§ adopt@dogswithoutborders.org π dogswithoutborders.org
Founded in 2006 by Galit Reuben β inspired by the displaced dogs of Hurricane Katrina β Dogs Without Borders started with a single foster dog from Taiwan and grew into one of LA’s most beloved small-breed rescues.
They pull from high-kill LA shelters and work with international partners in countries like Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Mexico. They’ve placed over 8,000 dogs and maintain a 100% adoption rate β every single dog finds a home. The entire operation runs through a network of dedicated foster families; no facility, love.
Specializes in: Small breeds, international rescues, and weekend adoption fairs across LA.
