🍷 Best Wines to Pair with Chocolate This Valentine’s Day

Wine 🍷

(With real bottle picks — including the best ones under $25)

Chocolate and wine might be one of the most romantic pairings of all time… but let’s be honest: it can also be one of the easiest to get wrong.

If you’ve ever taken a sip of wine after a bite of chocolate and thought, wait… why does this taste weird? — you’re not alone.

Chocolate is rich, intense, and often sweeter than people realize, which means the wine has to be able to stand up to it (not fight with it).

And while we’re here…

🍫 My Wild Card Favorite Pairing (Not Wine)

One of my all-time favorite pairings isn’t even wine:

Johnny Walker Gold + Dark Chocolate

There is something unreal about the smooth warmth of Johnny Walker Gold Label with a bite of dark chocolate — smoky, luxurious, and honestly perfect for a winter night.

That pairing taught me something important:

Chocolate needs a drink that can match its richness.

So if you’re looking for actual wines to bring out for Valentine’s Day, here are the best ones to reach for.

🍷 The Best Wines to Pair with Chocolate

🍫 1. Port + Dark Chocolate (The Ultimate Classic)

If chocolate had a soulmate in the wine world, it would probably be Port.

Port is sweet, deep, and full-bodied — which means it doesn’t get overpowered by dark chocolate’s intensity.

Best with:

  • 70% dark chocolate
  • Chocolate truffles
  • Flourless chocolate cake

Bottle Picks:

  • Graham’s Six Grapes Reserve Ruby Port
  • Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port
  • Dow’s Fine Ruby Port

This is the easiest “can’t miss” pairing.

🍷 2. Fruity Red Wines That Actually Work with Chocolate

Not every red wine works with chocolate — dry, tannic reds can taste bitter when paired with sweets.

But fruit-forward reds with softer tannins? Absolutely.

Best with:

  • Brownies
  • Chocolate bark
  • Chocolate-covered cherries

Bottle Picks:

  • Ridge Three Valleys Zinfandel
  • Turley Old Vines Zinfandel (splurge-worthy)
  • E. Guigal CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne (Grenache blend)

Think ripe fruit, spice, and warmth.

🍫 3. Cabernet Sauvignon + Extra Dark Chocolate

Cabernet is bold and structured, so it needs equally bold chocolate.

This pairing works best when the chocolate is very dark and not overly sweet.

Best with:

  • 80–90% cacao bars
  • Dark chocolate with espresso
  • Chocolate bark with nuts

Bottle Picks:

  • Justin Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)
  • Daou Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Stag’s Leap Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon (special occasion)

Skip milk chocolate here — it’ll clash.

🍓 4. Pinot Noir + Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

For the classic Valentine’s vibe, Pinot Noir is a beautiful choice.

It’s lighter, fruit-driven, and romantic without being overpowering.

Best with:

  • Chocolate-covered strawberries
  • Raspberry chocolate desserts
  • Chocolate mousse

Bottle Picks:

  • Meiomi Pinot Noir
  • La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
  • Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir (more refined)

This is one of the easiest date-night pairings.

🍾 5. Sparkling Rosé + Milk Chocolate (Fun + Festive)

If you want something playful and celebratory, sparkling rosé is an underrated match.

The bubbles and acidity cut through creamy sweetness perfectly.

Best with:

  • Milk chocolate hearts
  • White chocolate truffles
  • Chocolate-covered pretzels

Bottle Picks:

  • Chandon Brut RosĂ©
  • Lucien Albrecht CrĂ©mant d’Alsace RosĂ©
  • MoĂ«t & Chandon RosĂ© ImpĂ©rial (full glam)

This one just feels like Valentine’s Day.

🇫🇷 6. Banyuls or Maury (The French Secret Weapon)

These are lesser-known dessert wines from France that were practically made for chocolate.

Think: Port’s elegant French cousin.

Best with:

  • Chocolate lava cake
  • Dark chocolate ganache
  • Anything rich and dramatic

Bottle Picks:

  • Domaine du Mas Blanc Banyuls
  • Domaine de la Rectorie Banyuls
  • Mas Amiel Maury

If you want to impress someone with a “wow, what is this?” bottle — this is it.

🍯 7. Moscato + Sweet Chocolate Desserts

For those who love sweeter pairings, Moscato is approachable, light, and easy.

Best with:

  • Milk chocolate
  • Chocolate caramel desserts
  • Chocolate chip cookies

Bottle Picks:

  • Vietti Moscato d’Asti
  • Saracco Moscato d’Asti
  • La Spinetta Moscato d’Asti

This is more fun than fancy — and that’s the point.

đź’¸ Best Bottles Under $25 (Chocolate Pairing Edition)

You don’t have to spend a lot to make this feel special. These wines are widely available and deliver big Valentine’s energy on a budget.

🍫 Best Ports Under $25

  • Dow’s Fine Ruby Port (~$15)
  • Graham’s Six Grapes Port (~$20–$25)

Perfect with truffles and dark chocolate cake.

🍷 Best Reds Under $25

  • Epicuro Nero d’Avola (Trader Joe’s gem) (~$8–$12)
  • Michael David Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon (~$18–$22)
  • E. Guigal CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne (~$15–$20)

These are fruity, rich, and chocolate-friendly.

🍓 Best Pinot Noir Under $25

  • La Crema Pinot Noir (often ~$20–$25)
  • Chevalier Dyonis Pinot Noir (~$18–$22)

Ideal for strawberries and berry desserts.

🍾 Best Sparkling Rosé Under $25

  • Chandon Brut RosĂ© (~$20)
  • Bohigas Rosat Cava Brut (~$18)

Bubbles + milk chocolate = underrated perfection.

🍯 Best Sweet Wines Under $25

  • Vietti Moscato d’Asti (~$18)
  • Saracco Moscato d’Asti (~$17)

Perfect for cookies, caramel, and creamy chocolates.

🍷 Quick Rule of Thumb

The wine should be as sweet — or sweeter — than the chocolate.

Otherwise, the wine can taste bitter or sour next to something as rich as chocolate.

That said, some dry reds like Cabernet or Pinot Noir can still work — not because they contain sugar, but because their ripe, fruit-forward flavors create an illusion of sweetness on the palate.

In other words:

It’s less about actual sugar, and more about the wine having enough fruit and richness to match the chocolate’s intensity.

❤️ A Simple Valentine’s Pairing Night Idea

Make it a mini tasting:

  • One bar of dark chocolate
  • One box of truffles
  • One pint of strawberries
  • Two bottles: Port + Sparkling RosĂ©
  • Candles, music, no pressure

More memorable than a crowded dinner reservation.

Final Sip 🍫🍷

Whether you’re spending Valentine’s Day with someone you love, hosting friends, or treating yourself (highly encouraged), chocolate and wine is one of life’s easiest luxuries.

And if you decide to swap the wine for Johnny Walker Gold… I won’t judge. I get it.

Cheers to cozy pairings and sweet moments!!! Reach out with any questions or new finds 🥰
